What the science says

Your daily total is the main factor.

This is the point on which the literature is most consistent. When the total daily intake is the same, how you space it out has only a limited effect on muscle mass.

The data on meal timing is less solid than people claim.

Some studies show that balanced meal timing stimulates more protein synthesis over twenty-four hours. However, these measurements look at hours or days, not months of body composition changes. Long-term trials show mixed results.

In other words: the mechanism is plausible, but its translation into concrete results remains uncertain.

Where meal timing really matters is for those who aren't hitting their total. When intake is insufficient, spreading it out better mechanically allows you to consume more—the benefit comes from the increase in the total, not from the distribution itself.

Age changes the equation. After age 60, muscle sensitivity to protein decreases: you need a larger amount per meal to trigger the same response. It is in this population that the argument for distribution is strongest.

An investor who puts in one thousand euros a month gets roughly the same result as someone who invests twelve thousand euros all at once during the year.

The total amount is what builds capital. The regularity of payments has real value—it makes the effort easier to sustain and smooths out fluctuations—but it does not replace the amount itself.

People who ask this question almost always have a problem with their total, not their distribution.

They worry about whether their breakfast contains enough protein, even though their entire day contains significantly less than their situation requires. They are optimizing a third-order detail while the main factor remains unchanged.

When you look at an ordinary week, the conclusion is almost always the same: lunch and dinner are fine, but breakfast and snacks contain almost nothing. The problem isn't the distribution—it's that two out of four meals don't count.

You cannot fix an insufficient total by distributing it better.

What this means for you

Look at your day before your meals. The right question isn't "is this meal okay?" but "what does my day contain in total?"

If you are struggling to reach your total, spread it out. It is the simplest way to get there, and that is its real value.

After age 60, the argument becomes stronger. Muscle responds less effectively, and a larger amount per meal becomes useful.

Do not turn this into a rigid rule. A nutrition plan that forces you to count every meal won't last through a busy professional life—and consistency is what produces results.

Portion sizes vary from person to person. Age, weight, activity level, and goals all change your requirements.

Your body tracks intake over the course of the day, not by the meal.
