This figure is not a judgment on people. It is a judgment on the method.
Metabolic adaptation exists, but it is more modest than people say.
When you lose weight, your resting metabolism decreases—first because you are lighter, and a little beyond what the loss of mass alone explains. This extra bit is metabolic adaptation.
It is real. But the best-conducted studies measure it at a few dozen calories per day, not hundreds. Above all, it fades significantly after a few weeks of stabilization, and—this is the decisive point— its scale does not predict weight regain. People who show the most significant adaptation are not the ones who regain the most.

A diet is, by definition, an exceptional period with an exit date. When that date arrives, you go back to what you were doing before—which is exactly what led to the initial situation.
Losing weight and maintaining it are not two phases of the same process. They are two different problems, and the second one is almost never prepared for.
A company can turn its finances around in a quarter through brutal cuts: freezing hiring, stopping investments, and eliminating everything that isn't immediately vital.
The numbers go up. Then the next quarter arrives, the cuts are no longer sustainable, everything starts up again—and the company ends up exactly where it started, with an exhausted team to boot.
No one calls that a turnaround. They call it buying time.
People often arrive with a history of dieting behind them and a firm belief: they know what to do, they just can't stick to it.
It is almost always the opposite. They know what to do for three months. No one has ever explained to them what the sustainable version looks like—the one that accommodates business dinners, vacations, and busy weeks, and keeps working regardless.
The most useful shift is to change the question. Not "what is the best diet," but "what can I stick to in five years without even thinking about it." The answer is always less spectacular, and that is what makes it effective.
We see the same pattern with training: those who get the best results over five years are never the ones who were the strictest for three months.
A framework you abandon produces nothing, regardless of how good it was while it lasted.
Design for longevity, not for performance. The question isn't what produces the fastest results, but what you will still be doing two years from now.
Be wary of anything with an expiration date. An eight-week diet plan will have you right back where you started by week nine.
Severity is not a sign of seriousness. The stricter the framework, the more fragile it is. The best long-term results come from moderate constraints maintained over a long period.
Don't blame your metabolism. It isn't broken, and blaming it distracts you from what really matters.
Plan your exit before you enter. Know what your diet will look like once you reach your goal. If you can't answer that, the results won't last.
A successful diet isn't the one that helps you lose the most weight. It's the one you never have to quit, because it costs you nothing to maintain.
